Abstract

136,322. Spencer, J. B., and United States Hoffman Machinery Co. Jan. 4, 1919. Ironing-machines with pressing action only. - A normal and a greater pressure may be applied, the first derived from a foot-lever through toggle mechanism acting upon the upper pressing-member, and the other from steam power actuating pistons supporting the lower pressing-member. The pressing-head 16 is mounted on a lever 4 pivoted at 15 and connected by toggle-levers 19 with a spring-controlled foot-lever 17 pivoted at 18. A second toggle arrangement 25 is connected to the first at 27, and also through a link 24, bell-crank 21, and link 20 with the foot-lever 17. When the lever 17 is depressed, the head 16 is forced down upon the table 9 and is held by the toggle devices in the position shown. By the operation of a release pedal 29, the foot-lever 17 is raised and the toggles broken. The table is secured to pistons in a pair of steam cylinders 5 and is normally held stationary by the piston heads resting upon the ends of the cylinders. In order to exert the greater pressure upon the garment under treatment, steam may be admitted to the cylinders to force the table against the head when locked by the toggles. The head and table are steamheated, and the former has a perforated surface for the passage of steam to the garment, a valve actuated by a hand-lever 38' controlling the supply of steam from the heating-chamber. An ejector 44 may be started by actuation of a pedal 47 to exhaust the chamber below the perforated surface of the table, and so to dry the garment.
