Abstract

1363156 Generating pulse trains INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 31 Oct 1972 [25 Nov 1971] 54691/71 Heading G4H [Also in Division H4] Apparatus comprises means for moving a member at a variable velocity, e.g. in simple harmonic motion, and means responsive to the velocity of the member to generate a train of clock pulses, the time intervals between successive clock pulses in the train being varied to correspond to a succession of substantially equal increments of movement during the motion. As described, means for scanning a document, Fig. 1 (not shown), by means of a lens assembly (2) which directs an image of a portion of a document (15) on to an array of photodiodes (4) comprises an electrical vibrator (1) which causes the lens assembly to perform harmonic motion above the document, whereby characters may be scanned by the diode array. A coil 19 is attached to the shaft (17), (18) moved by the vibrator and is arranged between the poles of a permanent magnet (20) so that an A.C. signal is generated in the coil having a waveform corresponding to that of the velocity of motion. This signal is amplified at 6 and rectified at 7 so that only parts of the signal corresponding to scanning movements in a first sense are used. The signal is then passed to a controlled pulse generator 8 where it is used to charge a capacitor 10 connected between the base and drain of F.E.T. 12. Whenever the voltage at 10 reaches a certain level the F.E.T. conducts to emit a pulse to a distributer 9 and to discharge tha capacitor 10. The pulses are used to sample in the output from the diode array (4) and are thus timed to occur after equal increments of the document have been scanned.
