Abstract

1362801 Multi-disc brakes; discs DUNLOP Ltd 29 Sept 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46582/71 Heading F2E An aircraft braking system includes a stack of interleaved rotor and stator discs co-operating pairs of which are both carbon based and non- carbon based friction pairs. Fig. 1 shows a single unit having rotors 1, 2 and stators 3, 4, 5: the rotors 1, 2 are slidably keyed to a rotatable portion of the aircraft wheel and stators 3, 4, 5 are slidably keyed to a non- rotatable portion of the wheel support structure and the brake is actuated by a series of circumferentially spaced hydraulic cylinders 14 in a support 15. As shown, rotor 1 and stator 3 have iron based friction facings 6, 7, 12, rotor 2 and stator 5 have carbon based friction facings 8, 9, 13 whilst the central stator 4 has an iron based facing 10 to engage iron based rotor facing 7 and a carbon based facing 11 to engage carbon based rotor facing 8. The carbon based materials are for example, mixtures of moulded carbon and graphite crystalline structures, or pure carbon or graphite or graphite fibres in a carbon or graphite matrix: the non-carbon based material can have a minor proportion of carbon or graphite but consists mainly of sintered mixtures of metal and ceramics, for example an iron-based material may consist, by volume, of approximately 70% iron and 30% ceramic; other non-carbon based friction material such as bronze or ceramic based materials may be used in place of or in addition to the iron based material. The friction facings are conveniently applied to the rotors and stators as a series of circumferentially spaced pads. In Figure 2 (not shown) iron based pads are mounted in dove-tailed recesses in each side of a rotor or stator backing member which is sandwiched between the pads, but in Fig. 3 (not shown) the pads extend right through the rotor or stator. Fig. 4 shows a suitable method of mounting carbon based friction pads 30 on one side of a rotor or stator 31 and iron based pads 32 on the other side: the carbon pads 30 have protrusions 33 located in recesses 34 in the iron based pads 32. Fig. 5 illustrates an alternative construction in which the outer portion 35 of each pad 36 is made from an iron based material and the inner portion 37 is made from carbon based material with gaps 38, and the two portions in use will engage corresponding portions on an adjacent friction member of the same material. The aircraft braking system may have units as described above or alternatively half of the brake unit may comprise carbon-based friction pairs only, and the other half non-carbon based friction pairs only.
