Abstract

1362678 Automatic electric control of movement VARIAN ASSOCIATES 12 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970 (3)] 52585/71 Heading G3N [Also in Divisions G4-6 and H5] In a computer controlled radiation therapy machine the radiation head support and patients table are moved simultaneously to new positions by control signals derived from a comparison of their actual positions, as derived from position sensors, and their new positions. A magnetic tape cassette unit 28 contains in digital form the radiation treatment for a particular patient which comprises a sequence of steps, each step defining an angular position of the radiation head (12) support structure 8, the X, Y and Z positions of the table 2 plus its angular position about vertical axis 4, and information regarding the radiation dose to be given. Analogue position sensors provide the computer with position signals of the table and support structure in the above mentioned directions and orientations which are converted to digital form and compared with new position signals from the tape. An operator commands from a CRT/keyboard terminal 29 the initiation of each step and the computer in multiplex fashion derives digital position error signals which are converted to analogue form to control D. C. motors driving the elements in the above mentioned direction and orientation. The computer is programmed to determine from the actual position signals when any part of the table and support structure are on a collision course and causes the element to retreat to a zero position to begin again. Upon failure to reach the positions after a predetermined number of attempts a warning is given to the operator. Radiation doses are displayed to the operator who controls the setting of the radiation source to give that dosage. The operator may edit the data on the magnetic tape by means of his keyboard with the computer checking the input data to determine whether it is within the permissible limits.
