Abstract

1362464 Metal pipes, protecting JOHNSMANVILLE CORP 10 May 1972 [12 May 1971] 21771/72 Heading F2P [Also in Division B5] In protecting a metallic pipe from corrosion one surface of a layer of reinforcing fibre (e.g. a glass fibre mat) is bonded to an outer protective layer comprising an asbestos felt saturated with coal tar or asphalt with a laminating adhesive which penetrates a portion only of the fibre layer thereby forming a composite pipe wrap, the remainder of the fibre layer being substantially free from laminating adhesive and retaining a porous structure, the pipe is coated with a protective coating and the composite pipe wrap is wrapped around the coated pipe with the adhesive free surface of the fibre glass material in contact with the said coating, the thickness of the porous structure being such that it is embedded in approximately the outer onethird of the thickness of the coating and approximately the lower two-thirds of the thickness of the coating is free of the fibre layer. Coal tar or asphalt may also be used as the laminating adhesive and for the protective coating of the pipe. The protection can be effected either during manufacture of the pipe or after the pipe has been laid in position.
