Abstract

1362294 Photographic dye diffusion transfer process EASTMAN KODAK CO 2 Nov 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 50869/71 Heading G2C A photographic assemblage comprises (I) a photo-sensitive element comprising a support having thereon at least one photo-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer which contains or which is contiguous to a layer containing a quinone-coupling dye (i.e. a dye which in alkaline aqueous medium forms a -CH 2 - group and is diffusible therein and which is capable of coupling in the medium with the quinone, formed by oxidation of the hydroquinone or catechol silver halide developing agent, to form a non-diffusible product), (II) a dye imagereceiving layer and (III) a rupturable container containing alkaline processing liquid positioned so that during processing the container's contents are discharged within the assemblage, the assemblage containing a hydroquinone or catechol silver halide developing agent. The invention also comprises a photosensitive element as defined at (I) above containing a hydroquinone or catechol developing agent. The quinone-coupling dye may be a ketomethylene containing compound e.g. a 3- methyl-5-pyrazolone having a dye molecule attached to a N in the ring system and is preferably a compound of the formula:- or where dye is a dye group; n is 0 or 1; Z completes a non-metallic heterocyclic nucleus; X is an anion; and R is H, alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl or substituted aryl. The hydroquinone or catechol may have one of the formulae: - where R<SP>3</SP> is H, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen or optionally substituted aryl. The photosensitive element may comprise red-, green- and blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion layers each containing or having in a contiguous layer a cyan, magenta and yellow quinonecoupling dye respectively. The assemblage may contain a polymeric acid layer and a timing layer to delay the reduction in pH caused by the polymeric acid layer. The silver halide emulsions may be negative or direct-positive.
