Abstract

1362061 Matrix displays MARCONI CO Ltd 26 Oct 1971 [20 Jan 1971] 2759/71 Heading G5C [Also in Division H4] A liquid crystal display device comprises a plurality of display elements 0 ... 7 each with at least two layers of liquid crystal material and means for controlling the light transmission of each layer independently. A display strip 8 comprises elements 0 ... 7 each consisting of a portion of layers 10 ... 15 containing liquid crystal material in the shaded areas and air or other transparent material in the remaining areas. Each layer is bounded by two conductors across which a potential may be applied to render the liquid crystal portions of the layer opaque. The shaded areas and number of layers are such that on actuating selected layers a light path is provided through all the layers to only one display element, the remainder being opaque. A number of strips may be combined to provide a screen which can be scanned. Alternatively the elements may be elongated to form a panel and a screen formed from two such panels with the elements at right angles. Another embodiment comprises two layers of liquid crystal material 60, each between a continuous electrode 54, 55 on a glass sheet 51 and intersecting sets of strip electrodes 59. Extending across each set of electrodes 59 are strips 52, 53 of photoconductive material and light emitting strips 61, 62 comprising display strips 63, 64 similar to strips 8 and light sources 65, 66. A potential applied across both liquid crystal layers renders the panel opaque. When a portion of each photoconductive strip is illuminated by elements of the strips 61, 62, the resistance falls and the potential between strip electrodes adjacent the portions and the continuous electrode falls. The associated strips of liquid crystal become clear and a spot of light emerges. Moving the illuminating elements of the strips 61, 62 allows the panel to be scanned. The light source behind the panel may be an electroluminescent panel comprising red, blue and green emitting phosphors to provide a coloured display. The liquid crystal may be parazoxyanisole; compounds with linear structure of conjugated double bonds containing polar groups such as - N = N - and -CH = N- or OCH 3 ; derivatives of cholesterol C 27 H 46 O.
