1361868 Packaging foodstuffs OSCAR MAYER & CO Inc 14 Oct 1971 47820/71 Heading B8C A method of forming a package comprises locating an object to be packaged within a zone defined at least in part by a flexible film containing a plasticizer constituent which is capable of polymerization when subjected to radiation from a high-energy source whereby the film is rigidified and therafter subjecting the film to such radiation to polymerize the plasticizer and rigidify the film to a desired extent. In the arrangement shown, oxygen barrier polyvinylidene chloride films 34, 35 are extruded from die slots 30a, 32a and polyvinyl chloride films 36, 37 are extruded from die slots 31a, 31b, the films then being passed through a cooling bath 38 from which they emerge as film laminates 40, 41 and move together with a product 46 to be packaged to a package-forming unit 23 of a known form such as that described in U.S.A. Specifications 3,129,549 and 3,083,106. A chain of packages 47 emerging from the unit 23 is subjected to a heater 24 and subsequently to irradiation from a high energy source 25 to produce cross-linking of the polymerizable plasticizer in the polyvinyl chloride laminµ, therefore rigidifying the film laminations in the packages 47. The high energy source may be an electron accelerator, radio-active elements, X-ray devices, coronadischarge devices or ultra-violet emitters. The chain of packages 47 then moves through a separator 26 of known form, from which individual packages are discharged on to a conveyer 48, and waste film material is collected on a roll 49. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), only one film (59) is extruded, the other film (62) containing a plasticizer, being drawn off a roll (63) and the packages formed, being irradiated by the source 25 after separation in the unit (55). The apparatus may be used to produce "bubblepack" type packages, Fig. 3 (not shown), or packages comprising a base-board and a laminated cover section (81), Fig. 6 (not -shown).
