Abstract
1361645 Toothed and friction gearing ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 15 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 58335/71 Heading F2Q Toothed sun gears 2 on a driving shaft 1 mesh longitudinally aligned pairs of planet gears 5, each pair of gears 5 being rotatable with a cylindrical roller 6 mounted between them and frictionally engaging a cylindrical surface 14 of a fixed annulus 13. The planet gears 5 may be formed integrally with the rollers 6 and rotatably mounted on pins 7 in a carrier 8 which is coupled to an output shaft 12 by means of an L- shaped arm 11. The pins 7 may be located in radial slots in the carrier 8, or alternatively they may have eccentric portions 37, Fig. 4, which are rotatably mounted in the carrier 8. The frictionally engaging surfaces between the rollers 6 and annulus 13 may be provided with circumferential grooves. In modifications shown in Figs. 6 and 7, sun gears 2 are fixed, and annulus 13 is connected to an output shaft. In another modification, shown in Fig. 8, an internally toothed gear 15 is connected to an output shaft and this arrangement may be further modified as shown in Fig. 9 in which a single toothed planet gear 5 is located between longitudinally spaced rollers 26, one of which engages an annulus 13 and the other of which engages a freely rotating ring 17 to counterbalance centrifugal forces.
