Abstract
1361615 Producing lead-calcium alloys JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 10 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 61749/70 Heading C7D A lead-calcium alloy is produced by mixing molten lead in a non-oxidizing atmosphere with calcium hydride, the resulting mixture being maintained at such a temperature that the calcium hydride decomposes to provide metallic calcium which alloys with the molten lead. Preferably, the calcium hydride is submerged in the molten lead at temperatures over 600‹C while a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen is passed over the surface of the melt. Hydrogen evolved by decomposition of the hydride is allowed to bubble through the melt to agitate the mixture. Apparatus A crucible 11 is provided with a cover 12 and an inverted perforated cup 13. A filling tube 16 extends through cover 12 and is received in an aperture in base 13a of cup 13. Inlet and outlet tubes 14 and 15 provide for passage of non- oxidizing gas over the surface of melt 18 in which is inserted a thermometer 19. Calcium hydride is introduced through tube 16 by means of plunger 17 and the size of the perforations of cup 13 is such that the hydride is retained within the cup and hence below the surface of the melt. Leadcalcium alloy product is withdrawn through spout 21.
