Abstract

1361346 Fluorinated dioxoles E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 18 Feb 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 7638/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the formula in which R 1 and R 2 are perhalo-hydrocarbon groups of up to 6C containing at least one fluorine atom; and their preparation by dehalogenating a compound in which R 3 and R 4 are halogen other than fluorine, by contact with magnesium (or, where R 3 and R 4 are Br, by contact with zinc) in an organic solvent. Examples prepare perfluoro- 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole. Perfluoro - 2,2 - dimethyl - 4,5 - dibromo - 1,3- dioxolane is prepared by reaction of Br 2 with a mixture of perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole and perfluoro - 2,2 - dimethyl - 4,5 - dichloro- 1,3-dioxolane. The compounds of the invention may be polymerized (see Division C3).
