Flushing cisterns; bidet attachments for sanitary closets CLOS O MAT (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd 20 March 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 55970/71 Heading E1C A discharge valve assembly in the flushing cistern of a W.C. having a bidet attachment comprises a member 7 of inverted U form secured to a valve seat 6 so as to straddle a discharge valve 13, an actuating rod 12 guided by a hollow bolt, carried by the member 7, and also by a hollow bolt 15 extending through a top cover (17) of the cistern and engaged in a threaded aperture in the upper end 10 of a support bar 8, whose lower end 11 is secured to the member 7, a knob 16 at the upper end of the rod 12 for manual lifting of the valve 13, a compression spring 15 surrounding the rod 12 and engaged between the valve 13 and member 7, for returning the valve 13 to closed position, and a foot-operated or back operated control arrangement for initiating operation of a pump (not shown) of the bidet attachment, such operation being adapted to cause automatic lifting of the valve 13. The pump supplies water to a spraying unit (not shown) which is movable into a spraying position within the bowl for spraying the user, e.g. a disabled person. The means for automatically lifting the valve 13 comprises an assembly 21 having a chamber into which the water for spraying is supplied through a tube 22 from the pump when the pump is actuated. A restrictor valve between the chamber and a discharge tube 23 leading to the spraying unit causes pressure build up within the chamber which causes a ram 24 to be lifted. A fork arm 25 carried by the ram 24 then engages and lifts an abutment 18 on the rod 12 to lift valve 13. Instead of a hydraulic pressure chamber, a solenoid or mechanical linkage may be used for automatically lifting the valve 13 when the pump is operated.
