Abstract
1360402 Electrostatic separation; cleaning gases ENVIRONMENTAL MASTER SYSTEMS Inc 26 Oct 1971 [26 Oct 1970] 49783/71 Headings B1L BIT and B2J Polluted effluent gases from a boiler 10 pass through a multi-cone dust collector 18 to an irradiation zone 22 where they are exposed to radiation having an energy level of at least one million electron volts and a dosage level of at least one kilorad, whereby the particulate pollutants are charged and gaseous pollutants such as SO 2 are ionised. The charged particles tend to conglomerate with entrapped ionised gases, and these conglomerates are separated from the effluent gases by standard collection techniques involving the use of ancillary apparatus such as a knockout baffle 24, an absorbtive filter (Fig. 3, not shown), or an electrostatic precipitator (Fig. 4, not shown). The irradiation zone may comprise a shielded passageway containing a radio-isotope such as strontium 90, cobalt 60 or caesium 137 (Figs. 2, 3 and 5, not shown). Particulates, e.g. of carbon or sintered clay, may be injected into the effluent gas to act as charged carriers for the ionised gas pollutants.
