Abstract
1360087 Centrifugal separator SIEMENS AG 18 Oct 1971 [23 July 1971] 48442/71 Heading B2P A helical flow centrifugal separator, e.g. for use in air-conditioning plant for aircraft for removing moisture and other impurities from air, comprises a separating chamber 1; an input feed tube 2 and a gas outlet 9 at opposite ends or sides of the chamber; a tube 7 surrounding the chamber and defining therewith an annular duct 6; throttling means 3, 5 associated with the feed tube to cause incoming gas to be purified to be divided so that a portion of the gas enters the chamber 1 via the feed tube 2 and a portion flows through the duct 6; auxiliary gas infeed means 10 coupled to the duct 6 to receive the gas flowing through the duct and arranged to produce a helical flow of that gas adjacent the wall of the chamber 1, the helical flow having a component of direction opposite to the direction from the feed tube 2 to the outlet 9; and a discharge gap 12 radially outwardly of the feed tube 2 for receiving particles of impurities centrifugally discharged, from the gas flowing through the chamber 1, into the helical flow adjacent the wall of the chamber. The throttling means comprises an annular arrangement of swirl producing guide vanes 3 which may be spherically curved and, possibly, a throttle diaphragm 5. The infeed means 10 consist of swirl-producing vanes 10 connected to the duct 6 via a deflecting chamber 11. A flange 19 on the feed tube 2 prevents a large proportion of gas constituting the helical flow from being discharged with the particles into the gap 12 so that a portion of the helical flow is fed into the main stream of swirling gas in the chamber to reinforce its swirling movement. The gap 12 has an outlet tube 13 for separated particles. Any moisture still present in the gas leaving through the tube 9 and separated out on the wall of the tube is removed by means of an annular channel 15 formed in the tube 9 and communicating via apertures 16 with a collecting chamber 17.
