Abstract
1359746 Iron electrodes WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 20 Jan 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 2737/72 Heading H1B Activated iron electrode material comprises the product of reacting particles of iron oxide, iron oxide hydrate or mixtures thereof with a sulphur-substituted organic acid. Examples of the sulphur-substituted organic acid are: thioacetic, mercapto-succinic, thioglycolic, thiobenzoic and dithiodiglycolic. In the case ofthioacetic acid, the reaction product comprises iron acetate, iron sulphide and sulphur. An iron electrode (Fig. 1, not shown) for a nickel-iron battery comprises a plaque of nickel fibres and having a porosity of about 85%. The interstices of the plaque are loaded with an iron powder composition and the plaque is immersed in an aqueous solution of the sulphur-substituted organic acid to activate the powder, the activated plaque then being dried. The electrode may also be used in an iron-air battery.
