Abstract

1359736 Two-part couplings PRODUCT DESIGN & MFG CORP 24 June 1971 29680/71 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] A thermally actuated device, e.g. an electric plug or socket, comprises an annularly folded distensible member in sealed engagement with a body to form a fluid chamber which is filled with an inert liquid fluorinated hydrocarbon, and a resistance heating means submerged within the liquid; vaporization of the liquid on heating causing unfolding and distension of the member. In a self-ejecting plug a rubber diaphragm 17 is clamped between two body parts 10, 11 and the liquid 20 is contained in the chamber between the diaphragm and a recess 15 in the part 11. Manual closing of a switch (not shown) energizes a heating element H, vaporizes the liquid and causes the diaphragm to distend unrolling its annular fold 19 and extending a plunger 21 against its retaining spring 20 to cause the plug to be ejected. Plug contact pins 24, 25, the body parts 10, 11 and a cover 35 are held together by nuts 30, 31 and bolts 26, 27, the latter serving also to connect the pins to wires 32, 33 which lead to an appliance, the heating element and the switch.
