1359549 Coating apparatus LOCKWOOD TECHNICAL Inc 14 Dec 1971 58012/71 Heading B2L [Also in Division D1] An applicator wheel 32 for applying viscous liquid to an upwardly facing work surface is located in a support structure comprising a support block 22 and a face plate 26 having downwardly inclined edges 60, 62, 64, 74 which also slope inwardly and downwardly towards the wheel so that any liquid draining from above runs downwardly and is carried back to the applicator by the edges 34, 36 of the wheel. The excess liquid is carried up into recesses 90, 92 in the members 22, 26 which are spaced apart by a spacer plate 25 which forms a chamber in which the wheel runs. Coating liquid from a supply enters through a passage 49, 44 into a receiving chamber 42 from which it is metered by rotation of the wheel and a doctor blade 50. When the wheel is rotating and no liquid is applied a build-up can be formed in a space 46 in the spacer plate 25. The lower extremes of the edges 64, 74 may be rounded so that droplets form thereon which touch the wheel and are carried away before they reach their limiting size.
