Abstract

1359412 Chlorinated di- and tri-alkyl ring- substituted resorcyclic acid esters INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS & FRAGRANCES Inc 4 Jan 1972 [4 Jan 1971 12 Oct 1971] 51677/73 Divided out of 1359411 Heading C2C The novel esters of Formula I: in which R 2 , R 3 and R 5 are identical or different C 1 -C 3 alkyl groups and R 6 is Cl or a C 1 -C 3 alkyl group, may be prepared by reacting a compound of general Formula II: wherein R 2 , R 3 and R 5 are as defined above and R 4 is H or a C 1 -C 3 alkyl group, or a tautomer thereof, with an oxidative source of chlorine (e.g. Cl 2 or HOCl) at a temperature in the range 0-30‹ C. Methyl - 3,6,6 - trimethyldihydroresorcylate and methyl 6,6-dimethyldihydroresorcylate are prepared by condensation of dimethyl malonate with a mixture of 2-methyl-2-hexen-4-one and 2-chloro-2-methyl-2-hexen-4-one or with 4- methyl-3-penten-2-one respectively.
