Abstract

1359349 Timepieces JOHN SMITH & SONS MIDLAND CLOCK WORKS DERBY Ltd 4 Dec 1972 [4 Dec 1971] 56376/71 Heading G3T A clock is driven continuously by a weight W through an epicyclic gear system J.K.L. coupled to a Geneva mechanism G.H. actuating a switch B periodically to energize an electric motor (not shown) arranged to reverse the action of the gear system and raise the weight without interfering with the drive to the clock. The planet wheel J is carried by a barrel M and meshes with the sun-wheel K and the internal teeth on the ring L and since the sun-wheel is stationary when the motor is not running the ring L is driven by the planet wheel as the barrel revolves about the motor output shaft S and through chain sprocket (L<SP>2</SP>) drives the clock. A locking disc (N) rotating with the barrel M frees the star wheel G allowing it to be turned by stud H on barrel M and pin F turns cam D until it operates switch B to start the motor. The barrel is driven in the opposite direction until the lever B' of the switch drops into port D' of the cam stopping the motor. If switch B fails to operate, the star wheel will rotate until pin F operates a safety switch C.
