Abstract

1358997 Blast furnace operation P RHEINLANDER 20 May 1971 [23 May 1970 26 June 1970] 15966/71 Heading C7D A supplementary carbonaceous fuel is decomposed externally of the furnace (which operates with hot blast) and the products introduced into the furnace hearth, the resultant cooling effect being compensated temporarily by using less ore in the charge, or by increasing the oxygen content or temperature of the bath, until a new equilibrium is attained. The fuel may be reacted with sufficient oxygen to convert all its carbon content to carbon monoxide, or with less oxygen when soot is produced; in such a case the oxidizing gas should be pre-heated so that a crystalline reactive soot is obtained. In another embodiment water vapour is added to the fuel during the reaction. Decomposition products of the fuel may be supplied to the hearth through a pipe extending through a tuyÞre, or separately from the latter. Decomposition may be carried out in a common reaction chamber serving all tuyÞres, or each tuyere may have an individual chamber. The furnace may be operated under such conditions that the CO 2 : CO and H 2 O: H 2 ratios in the top gas are those corresponding to the equilibrium between iron, wastite and carbon, while some or all of the top gas may, after removal of CO 2 and H 2 O be recycled to the reaction vessel.
