Abstract

1358882 Polymerizing substituted norbornenes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 June 1972 [2 July 1971] 31123/71 Heading C3P Norbornenes containing an esterified hydroxyl group, an esterified carboxyl group, a halogen or a nitrile group as a substituent in the 5 position or pendant to the 5 position through an alkylene radical are polymerized by ring opening thereof in the liquid phase using a tungsten, molybdenum or tantalum compound and an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups Ia, IIa, IIb or IIIa of the Mendeleef Periodic Table. There may be an alkyl group as a cosubstituent in the 5 position. In the examples norborn-2-enyl-5-acetate, 5-cyanonorbornene-2, the methyl ester of 5-methyl, 5- carboxy norbornene-2, norborn-2-enyl-5-chloride and the ethyl ester of 5-carboxy norbornene-2 are homopolymerized and norbornenyl acetate is polymerized in the presence of octene-1 using as catalyst WCl 6 , ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and ethanol, the HCl produced by reaction of the WCl 6 and ethanol being released before addition of the aluminium compound and the polymerization being terminated by addition of ethanolamine, ethanol benzene and an antioxidant.
