Abstract
1358668 Friction clutches; "change-speed" control GENERAL MOTORS CORP 10 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971 (2)] 37296/72 Headings F2C and F2D Fluid operated clutches, 18 and 20 (Fig. 2), in which a piston 88 acts on a presser disc 92 to engage discs 96 with discs 98 to close a clutch 20, have balls 90, 90a in their pistons 88, 88a which co-operate with springs 86, 86a (see Fig. 4) to mechanically close the respective clutch if the output member 52 overruns the input member 44 (in the case of clutch 20) whilst the clutches are disengaged. This engagement is caused by the balls 90 running up the ramps formed by the springs 86 to move presser plate 92 and compress discs 96 and 98. In the case of clutch 18 the onput is hub 46 which acts, through presser plate 92a on the balls 90a, to move them along springs 86a and engage the clutch. Fig. 9 shows an alternative embodiment in which a first spring 86 applies a light preloading to the ball 90, second spring 84 applying a stronger force as the ball 90 approaches a stop 106 which limits its movement. Variable ratio gearing.-In Fig. 1 is shown a variable ratio automatic transmission incorporating clutches 18 and 20 engageable when output shaft 12 drives the input, by means of the mechanical engagement means 80 and 82 described above. This allows the turbine 22 of the torque converter 14 to be driven, and so the pump 36 for supplying fluid pressure to the converter, the clutches 18 and 20 and auxiliary services is also driven so that the vehicle may be push started by virtue of the mechanical engagement means, 80, 82. One-way clutches 32 and 34 connect the pump 36 to both the pump 24 and the turbine 22 of the torque converter.
