1358479 Singeing fabrics ERNEST TURNER (PAREX) Ltd 24 Jan 1973 [10 March 1972] 11193/72 Heading D1S Apparatus for singeing fabric comprises a rotatably mounted drum 8 around which the fabric 4 to be singed passes, a burner 12 positioned adjacent the drum 8 for singeing the outer surface of the fabric 4, and first and second devices 14, 13 arranged adjacent the drum 8 respectively before and after the burner 12 for effecting physical agitation of the surface of the fabric 4. As shown in Fig. 1, knitted fabric 4 is supplied to a singeing machine 2 from a roll 5 in a batch feed machine having locating devices to adjust the fabric transversely to maintain it in a predetermined feed path. After singeing, the fabric 4 is re-wound on a roll 6. In the machine 2, the fabric 4 passes through an edge uncurling device 10 and around scroll rolls 11 to the water-cooled drum 8. The burner 12 is adjustable towards and away from the drum 8 and pivotally mounted so that the angle of flame can be adjusted. The flame height is controllable by controlling the air/ gas mixture fed to the burner 12. The devices 13, 14 each comprise an elongate perforated pipe connected to a compressed air supply to direct air jets onto the fabric surface. The device 14 raises the fibres to be singed and the device 13 dislodged singed material and each prevents overheating of the fabric 4. A hood 15, shaped as shown, is connected via a pipe 16 to an extractor fan (not shown) to remove the dislodged singed material. The drum 8 and guide rollers 9 are positively driven to avoid stretching the fabric. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, two drums (8) each with associated burners (12), devices (13), (14) and hoods (15) are arranged so that both sides of the fabric are singed.
