Abstract

1358255 Tobacco-smoke filters CELANESE CORP 13 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 20829/72 Divided out of 1355519 Heading A2C [Also in Division D1] Tobacco smoke filters are made from a web produced by extruding molten polypropylene, polyethylene, polyesters or polyamide having a melt index of 5 to 60 and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.4 to 1.25 through an orifice, attenuating the polymer stream by means of a gas stream to produce a continuous filament, collecting said filament upon a cylinder 19 or an endless belt to form a random autogeneously bonded web and forming grooves in the web by rollers 24. Rolls 24 are maintained at a temperature of 25‹C to 225‹C and produce longitudinal, sinusoidal or zig-zag grooves. The web may be withdrawn from cylinder 19 by rigidly, hinged or spring mounted calendering rolls 23 which apply a pressure of up to 2000 Ibs./linear inch to compress but not glaze the web. The web may be dusted with activated carbon, silica gel, granular polyurethane, cellulose acetate flake, wood pulp, flock or liquid additives. The web is converted into tobacco smoke filter rods at 28.
