Abstract

1358208 Glass steel composite SCHLADITZWHISKERS AG 26 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971] 3609/72 Heading C1M A composite glass/steel material comprises steel fibres having a diameter of less than 50 microns and which form at least 25% but not more than 90% of the total volume of the material, the remainder being glass. Preferably the coefficient of thermal expansion of the glass at room temperature is less than that of the steel. The fibres may be coated with an oxide layer to improve their adhesion to the glass. The steel fibres are produced by the decomposition of iron carbonyl in a magnetic field at a temperature of between 200‹ and 350‹ C. Chromium, molybdenum or nickel carbonyls may be uninstantaneously decomposed so that the fibres also contain one of these elements. The glass, which is preferably soda-lime glass is mixed in powdered form with the fibres and the mixture formed into moulded bodies and sintered at 500‹ C. Alternatively the mixture may be extruded at above 500‹ C. During either process the fibres may be aligned by the influence of a magnetic field.
