Abstract

135,806. Egerton, H. C., and Duncan, H. L. Oct. 28, 1918. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles; soles.- Relates to the manufacture of reinforced rubber shoe elements, such as shoe soles, and to shoes in which such elements are incorporated, and consists in forming such elements of a compound fabric of rubber and one or more layers of canvas or other woven, fibrous, or porous material impregnated or coated with phenolic condensation cementing-material. The use of such impregnated material for stiffening shoes is described in Specification 135,555. The rubber soles may be formed separately from the shoe by assembling the impregnated fabric with the rubber and then subjecting the assembled layers to heat and pressure, if desired in suitably shaped moulds; or, where the nature of the other shoe materials permits, the sole may be positioned on the shoe and then cured. Fig. 1 shows a boot in which the various shoe elements are made of fabric impregnated with phenolic condensation cementing-material, as described in the above-mentioned Specification, but with a sole 20 and heel 21 of rubber which are vulcanized and united to a throughsole 19, optionally provided with a rubberized coating 93, simultaneously with the curing of the other shoe elements. The heel 21 may be further secured by the provision of embedded flat-headed rivets. Fig. 3 shows a sole in which two layers 26, 27 of impregnated fabric with an intermediate layer 28 at the shank are assembled with a rubber layer 25, the edge of the fabric being reduced in thickness or, as described in the above-mentioned Specification, arranged to contain a relatively small amount of the impregnating-material, to facilitate sewing &c. Fig. 4 shows another construction of sole in which a layer 51 of open-mesh fabric is arranged between two layers 50, 52 of impregnated material and with its edge portion 53 extending into or through the edge 60 of the rubber layer 49. A frictioned or other rubber coating 93 may be applied to the lower surface of the layer 52, preferably before treatment with the impregnating-material. Fig. 5 shows another construction in which impregnated layers 55, 56, optionally stitched together at 61, are incorporated with the rubber layer 49 by providing a projecting edge 92 on the lower layer, and, if desired, by bending down locking-flaps 58, 59 to allow plugs 57 of rubber to project through the layers. Fig. 6 shows a sole chiefly for repair work, in which a wide attaching edge is left at the toe. Rubberized fabric strips 78, 79 having a rubber coating 88 may enclose the impregnated members 81, 82, and may be stitched thereto at 70 before the parts are cured. The rubber sole is provided with a thinner shank 72 preferably having a bevelled portion 85 at its rear edge 74, which may extend over the heel seat of the shoe.
