Abstract

1358065 Aural plug GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 13 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 42513/ 71 Heading A5R A custom moulded hearing protecting device adapted to be mounted in the ear comprises a resiliently flexible body formed in-situ in the dilated ear canal from a synthetic elastomer which is non-irritating to living tissue and has a surface 2 conforming substantially to the configuration of the surface of the auricle (6), Figure 4 (not shown), and which covers less than the auricle area of the ear, and a protuberance 4 for positioning in the ear canal (16), the protuberance having a configuration which is greater than that of the undilated ear canal. The device may be made of an organopolysiloxane of a room temperature vulcanizable composition and may cover the concha (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), tragus (15), anti-tragus (22), and upper forward portion of the antihelix (8). It may include a handle 24 to facilitate insertion and removal of the device, and a coating of sealant used to improve sound attenuation may also be supplied. Such a sealant may be e.g. an animal oil, an emulsion of vegetable oil, heavy mineral oil or petroleum jelly. Alternatively, a thin resinous layer may be applied to the device by dip-coating in a cured organo-polysiloxane resin in order to improve sound attenuation.
