Abstract

1357894 Vehicle wheels; suspensions J R C MOORE 24 May 1971 [28 May 1970] 25857/70 Addition to 1277611 Headings B7C and B7D [Also in Division F2] In order to avoid cyclic angular changes between the hub 2 and rim 1 of a rotatable member, e.g. a wheel, pulley or gear, when the hub is offset radially from its normal position coaxial with the rim, the rotatable member, primarily for use in conjunction with the suspension system claimed in parent Specification 1,277,611, has torque transmissible compliant means coupling the hub 2 and rim 1, the compliant means comprising at least two spoke structures each comprising first and second spoke portions coupled in series at an angle (approx. 90 degrees) to each other between respective couplings on the hub and rim and each portion comprising two members 5 which may be made of rigid material or resilient sheet material, e.g. spring steel each coupled at two distinct coupling regions, the coupling regions at the series junction being fixedly joined, and the four coupling regions of each spoke portion being substantially at the corners of a parallelogram, as seen axially of the rotatable member. The spoke members may be freely (Fig. 1) or resiliently (Fig. 9) hinged and, in the case of resilient spoke members, may alternatively be fixed at their ends (Fig. 3) in order to provide the spoke structure with the necessary compliancy. Where resilient hinges are used they preferably comprise a hinge-pin 7 which passes through interdigitate, hollow fingers on two relatively rotatable parts, and at least one resilient bush 6 interposed in a compressed condition between the pin and fingers, as shown in Fig. 9. The member is so designed that the hub can deflect diametrically to at least 15% of the effective outer diameter of the spoke structure. Convenient criteria on which to base the design of the spoke structures and a method of mounting the member in the said suspension system are disclosed in the Specification.
