Abstract

1357676 Frequency changing STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 14 Nov 1972 52433/72 Heading H3T A waveguide mixer includes a mixer diode 5 mounted in or closely adjacent to a resonant slot 3 in a wall of a first length of waveguide 1 constituting on one side an evanescent mode filter-i.e. a waveguide operating at below its nominal cut-off frequency, being capacitance loaded to that end by means of adjustable screw member 2-for coupling to power from a signal source. On the other side of the mixer diode 5 it constitutes a further evanescent mode filter for coupling the diode to power from a local oscillator source. Covering the slot 3 is a second length of waveguide 6 having a crosssectional dimension such as to be evanescent at the mixer generated image frequency and propagating at the mixer generated sum frequency. A capacitative obstacle, i.e. screw 8, is located in the second length of waveguide 6 at such a distance from the slot 3 as to constitute therewith an evanescent mode resonator tuned to the image frequency so as to effect termination of the image frequency. A shortcircuit plate 10 is located in the second length of waveguide 6, beyond the capacitative obstacle, being so positioned as to effect reactive termination of the sum frequency. In the embodiment, local oscillations are prevented from entering into the signal source by means of a second slot 4 in the waveguide 1, providing coupling to an evanescent mode filter comprising waveguide 7 tuned by means of screw 7 to the local oscillator frequency, while an I.F. signal is obtained from mixer diode 5, which may be a Schottky barrier diode, over low-pass filter 12 in a coaxial output coupling 13. The mixer diode may alternatively be coupled into the main waveguide via a dumbbell shaped transverse slot (Fig. 14, not shown).
