Abstract
1357530 Feeding filaments or films COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 13 Aug 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 42993/70 Heading D1F A method for the treatment of a continuous filament or film 2 in the presence of a fluid comprises passing the continuous filament or film through a tube 1, at least 1 metre long and having a bend in it, while passing a fluid through the tube in the direction of motion of and past the filament or film whereby the fluid imparts a tension to the filament or film, the filament or film contacting the wall of the tube at the bend and creating frictional forces in the filament or film. The internal configuration of the bend is smooth. The cross-sectional shape of the tube may be circular, elliptical, square or rectangular. The fluid is preferably a gas which may be inert to the material of the filaments or film or react therewith. The gas is preferably at superatmospheric pressure, and excess gas may be bled off at points intermediate the ends of the tube. The flow can be continuous or pulsating, and can be heated prior to entry into the tube. The tube itself may be positioned within a furnace or oven. The method finds particular application during any stage of the process of forming carbon fibres, filaments or films as described and claimed in Specification 1315940.
