1357495 Hydrocarbon pyrolysis VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY I PROEKTNY INSTITUT NEFTEPERERABATYVAJUSCHEI I NEFTEKHMICHESKOI PROMYSHLENNOSTI 19 May 1972 23673/72 Heading C5E A gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon feedstock is cracked by passing the pre-heated feed through a tube in a pyrolysis zone and feeding a molten material into the tube to form a film on the internal wall of the tube thereby preventing contact of the feed with the tube wall and consequent coke formation, the film being moved along the tube by passage of the feedstock. The molten material may be a metal, an oxide or a salt and may be introduced at further points along the tube to replenish the film. The molten material may contain the solid oxides of Si, Al or Ni dispersed therein to increase its viscosity. An apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a furnace having a convectively heated preheating zone, a radiantly heated pyrolysis and tube extending from the one to the other containing an annularly disposed nozzle to introduce molten material. Preferably the tube is in coil form with helical baffle plates at the bends. Examples describe the pyrolysis of butane, in the presence of steam, to ethylene and propylene with molten LiCl forming the film, and the pyrolysis, again in the presence of steam, of a 30-160‹C. gasoline fraction to give mainly C 2 -C 4 olefins using molten lead which contains Al 2 O 3 , promoted with potassium vanadate, SiO 2 and NiO.
