Abstract

1357392 Measuring temperature electrically SIEMENS AG 21 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 49063/71 Heading G1N Apparatus for measuring the temperature of the exhaust gas streams from the combustion chambers of an I.C. engine comprises a plurality of thermocouples 1a-n, one per chamber, each connected by a respective amplifier 13 to respective amplifier 13 to respective first input terminals E1 of comparison devices 10a-n and by switches 15 to an average-forming summing amplifier 11, the output signal from which corresponds to the mean exhaust gas temperature and which is connected simultaneously to each of the second input terminals E2 of the comparison devices, whereby when the difference between the average and an individual temperature exceeds a predetermined magnitude this is indicated by device 14 or an alarm is set off. The gain of the amplifier 11 relative to each input is inversely proportional to n, the number of cylinders monitored. The third contact of each switch 15 is connected to the first contact of the next switch so that if a thermocouple fails it is switched out of circuit and the voltage from the adjacent thermocouple is applied to the input terminal which would have been supplied by the failed thermocouple and the first contact of each switch is connected to the amplifier 11 while the second contact goes to El. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) the third contact of each switch is connected in common with the output terminal of the amplifier so that if a thermocouple fails it is switched out of circuit and the average voltage at the output of amplifier 11 connected in its place. In the Fig. 3 embodiment the inputs 11a. to n of the averaging device 11 are connected through like resistances 16 to a common point 17 which is connected through an amplifier 18, having high input impedance, to the output 12 of the device 11. The voltage at the point 17 represents mean gas temperature and a faulty thermocouple may be removed from circuit by operation of the appropriate make/break switch 15. Each resistance 16 is combined in a set 20 with the components 10a, 13, 15 appropriate for each monitoring site.
