Abstract

1357334 Lung ventilators BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 21 July 1971 [21 July 1970] 35391/70 Heading A5T A lung ventilator capable of supplying gas selectively at either a constant, increasing or decreasing flow rate comprises a flow path 8, 14, 20; a first gas reservoir 12 in the path; a first orifice 10, placed upstream of the first reservoir 12; a bypass path 6 which may be selected by a two-position valve 4, extending from upstream of the first orifice 10 to immediately downstream of the first reservoir 12; a second orifice 26 downstream of the first reservoir 12 and the bypass path 6, and having a larger cross-sectional area than the first orifice 10; a valve 16 between the bypass path 6 and the second orifice 26; and a second gas reservoir 24 adapted to have its interior placed selectively in communication with the atmosphere, via 28, or with the path 20 between the valve 16 and the second orifice 26. The second reservoir 24 is connected to the path 20 by a path 18 having a two-position valve 22. The cross-sectional area of the orifices, and the internal volume of the reservoirs, may be adjustable. Alternatively each orifice or reservoir may be replaced by a plurality of orifices or reservoirs of differing cross-sectional areas or internal volumes respectively, of which a particular orifice or reservoir may be switched selectively into its operational position. A constant inspiratory flow rate is obtained by positioning the valves so that gas passes through the bypass path 6 to the second orifice 26. A decreasing flow rate is obtained by passing gas through the first orifice 10 and first reservoir 12 to the second orifice 26, the first reservoir 12 having filled during the expiratory phase, in which the valve 16 is closed by a suitable automatic control. An increasing flow rate is obtained by passing gas through bypass path 6 to the second orifice 26, some of the gas being diverted into the second reservoir 24, which is then vented to the atmosphere in the expiratory phase, in which the valve 16 is closed.
