1357168 Photopolymerizable compositions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 7 Oct 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 46667/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Photopolymerizable compositions comprise (A) 40 to 97 weight per cent of a mixture of (1) 15 to 80 weight per cent of a water-soluble linear N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer of molecular weight at least 1000 and (2) 20 to 85 weight per cent of a polymeric polycarboxylic acid soluble or swellable in water or aqueous alkali and of molecular weight at least 500, the carboxyl group content thereof being at least 5 weight per cent of the acid, and (B) 3 to 60 weight per cent of at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer compatible with (A) which does not boil below 100‹C. and of which at least a predominant proportion has more than one photopolymerizable double bond in the molecule. The vinyl pyrrolidone polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer, particularly with monomers containing reactive groups such as epoxy, isocyanate and hydroxyl groups which may subsequently be reacted with unsaturated compounds to introduce unsaturated groups into the copolymer. The polycarboxylic acid may be a polymer of a C 3-12 unsaturated acid or polycarboxylic acid partial ester, and may have olefinically unsaturated side chains. Suitable monomers B include bisacrylamides, methylol acrylamide/aliphatic diol reaction products, diol mono-(meth)acrylate/ diisocyanate reaction products, unsaturated acid esters of polyols, triallyl cyanurate and triacryloyl perhydrotriazine, optionally with monounsaturated esters and amides. The compositions may contain conventional photopolymerization initiators, inhibitors, dyes and fillers, and may be applied in solution to substrates to form printing plates. Examples describe compositions of (1) vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyacrylic acid, diether of ethylene glycol and N-methylol acrylamide, - benzoin methyl ether and hydroquinone; (2) saponified vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyacrylic acid, triethylene glycol diacrylate, benzoyl carboxylic acid and methylene blue; (3) vinyl pyrrolidone/N-vinyl acrylamide copolymer, styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer esterified with ethylene glycol monoacrylate, trimethylol propane triacrylate, cyclopentadienyl iron dicarbonyl and thiourea; and (4) saponified vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer reacted with acrylic acid and acrylic anhydride, maleic anhydride/acrylie acid copolymer esterified with butanediol monoacrylate, trimethylol propane triacrylate, α-methylol benzoin methyl ether, hydroquinone and sodium 2,5-indigo disulphonate.
