Abstract
1356688 Preparing 2-chloroethane phosphonic acid FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 10 Dec 1971 [12 Nov 1971] 57468/71 Heading C2P 2-Chloroethane phosphonic acid is obtained by cleaving 2-chloroethane phosphonic acid bis- (2-chloroethyl) ester with gaseous HCl with the exclusion of water under an elevated pressure and at 100 to 200 C. The reaction is generally carried out in a closed autoclave at a pressure of 2 to 25 atmospheres gauge and the dichloroethane formed in the reaction is preferably removed continuously or discontinuously from the reaction zone during the reaction, e.g. by condensation with the aid of an enamelled pressure reflux condenser with connected receiver in a closed system, or by opening the system and continuously discharging the gaseous dichloroethane while maintaining an elevated reaction pressure by forcing in hydrogen chloride. Alternatively, if the dichloroethane is not distilled off the reaction mixture separates into two layers, the upepr layer comprising dichloroethane and the 2-chloroethane phosphonic acid being recovered from the lower layer which may first be distilled under reduced pressure to yield further small amounts of dichloroethane. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,187,002.
