Abstract

1356664 Purifying exhaust gases ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 24 Aug 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 39582/71 Headings F1B and FIT Hydrocarbon fuel is burnt in an automotive power plant with an amount of air to yield an exhaust gas having an oxygen content of 25-95% of the stoichiometric equivalent of the reducing gas present, the exhaust gas being contacted in a first reaction stage, without additional air, with a catalyst to reduce NO and then having air added to oxidize the reducing gas in a second reaction stage. Preferably the oxygen content of the power plant exhaust gas is from 30% to 70% of stoichiometric. The catalyst in the first reaction stage may be one or more noble metals (e.g. ruthenium and platinum) or may be nickel or a nickel-copper alloy. The second reaction stage may contain a catalyst or may be a thermal reactor. The automotive power plant may be an I.C. engine or a turbine. The hydrocarbon fuel may be gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas.
