Abstract

1356443 Granulating CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE and HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DU NORD ET DU PAS-DE-CALAIS 8 July 1971 [10 July 1970] 32199/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] Expanded granules of a silico-aluminous material are produced by melting the material in the presence of an atmosphere at a pressure such that liberation of gases from the material is prevented, forming droplets of the melt, and contacting the droplets with an atmosphere which permits liberation of gases whereby expanded granules are formed. The material may be colliery shale, clay, or fly ash. It may be ground and calcined in a fluidized bed at 1000-1050‹ C., with added carbon if necessary. The melting chamber may be made of graphite or vitreous carbon, heated by passing A.C. between a graphite electrode and the walls of the chamber. Alternatively the walls may be of refractory material which are cooled so that a solidified layer forms. The molting temperature may be 1300-1400‹ C., and fluxes may be added if necessary. Droplets may be formed by passing the melt through holes in the base of the chamber, drop formation being controlled by heating of the base-plates. The droplets may pass through air with a low CO partial pressure into a fluidized bed of sand at 250- 400‹ C. The granules and sand may be separated by gravity or screening. Exhaust gases may be fed to the calciner.
