Abstract

1355894 Ultrasonic distance measurement BOEING CO 16 Oct 1972 47666/72 Heading H4D A method of detecting the position of a liquidgas interface comprises measuring the transmission time of an ultrasonic signal transmitted from a point in the gas to a point in the liquid. Although it is stated that the invention may be used in any liquid level measurement, the main embodiment describes a system for controlling the submerged depth of a hydrofoil on an ocean going hydrofoil vessel. A continuous wave signal is transmitted by transducer 16 on the hull to a receiving transducer 18 on the hydrofoil. The received signal is fed to the input of gated amplifier 46 whose other input is derived from frequency division of the oscillator 40 output. Difference in phase between transmitted and received signals controls the frequency of oscillator 40, whose output represents the transit time and which is fed to discriminator 54 and display 26. The discriminator provides an output to a control system which adjusts the foil attitude thus controlling its depth. The beam width of transducer 16 is sufficient to ensure that for an average ocean wave (slope 16 degrees) the extremities of the beam are incident at the critical angle, thus ensuring that the beam ensonifies the whole underwater volume (Figs. 2- 4, not shown). Display 26 may be x-y recorder or a C.R.T.
