Abstract

1355874 Jointing by tube expanding; welding by pressure YORKSHIRE IMPERIAL METALS Ltd 9 June 1972 [15 June 1971] 28011/71 Headings B3J and B3R An insert for locating an explosive charge in a tube to be expanded or welded in an aperture in a tube plate comprises a tubular member of energy-transmitting material having an end wall for supporting the charge. In one form, Fig. 1, a polyethylene insert has a locating skirt 3 and an integral end wall for locating the charge part 8 of a detonator 7 within the tubular member 1. Alternatively, Fig. 2 (not shown), tightly-fitting end walls are inserted in each end of the tubular member, the detonator being inserted through an aperture in one wall and located in a recess in the opposite wall. The insert may be moulded or machined, and it is stated that for welding to occur the velocity along the tube of the collision front must not exceed 20% of the sonic velocity of the materials.
