Abstract

1355760 Detectors for physiological quantities PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Oct 1972 [23 Oct 1971] 48404/72 Heading A5K [Also in Division E2] A detector I for physiological quantities such as blood pressure, heart beat frequency &c., comprises two arms 3 connected near their ends by a hinge 5, each arm 3 accommodating near its free end, an end member 7, at least one of which is displaceable relative to its arm 3, for engaging a part of the human body, characterised in that the free end of at least one arm 3 has a mount 13, the shape and dimensions and the nature of whose surface and that of the end member 7 which is connected to the arm 3 via a flexible connecting member 23, being chosen such that the end member 7 is arranged to be immovable when a given minimum force near its centre presses it into the mount 13. The end member 7 has a part-spherical surface facing the mount 13 which comprises a generally annular recess with three bearing points (21), Fig. 3 (not shown). The end member 7 is stable against forces applied towards the recess in a given region around the axis of the member 7. The flexible connecting member 23 is an e-shaped resilient wire having a straight portion rotatably located in the end member 7 and a curved portion in a groove 27 in the arm 3. The given minimum force of 10 gm. required to stabilise the end member 7 is produced by a clamping spring 29 and friction in the hinge'5 which comprises a hinge pin 33 inserted through eylets 31 in the arms 3 and through at least one friction ring 35 arranged between two eyelets 31 that are urged toward each other by a compression spring 37 whose force can be adjusted by varying the number of friction rings 35. In another embodiment the hinge pin 33 has a screw bolt (41), Fig. 8 (not shown) which cooperates with a nut (43) which can be tightened to compress the friction rings 35 to produce a force much larger than that produced by a spring. The end members 7 each carry a detachable measuring head 9 comprising a photodiode (59) (Fig. 10, not shown) and a lamp (57). The detector 1 may be clamped to an earlobe after opening the arms 3 by pressing together end portions 11 of the arms 3. A connecting, cable (51), Fig. 7 (not shown), attached to a connecting piece (49) that fits tightly in one of the radial grooves (55), is attached to the neck with adhesive tape (61), Fig. 11 (not shown) and the detector 1 is surrounded by a thick ring (63) of silicone rubber. The end member 7 may alternatively be semicylindrical and the measuring head may comprise mechanical, optical or electrical measuring elements.
