Abstract
1355642 A method of expanding structural honeycomb material DUFAYLITE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 13 May 1971 [13 Feb 1970] 6935/70 Heading B8C Unexpanded honeycomb material, made of strips of material such as stout paper, cardboard &c., secured together with patches of adhesive as described in Specification 591,772, is expanded to a stable, open-cellular, state by extending the material in its expansion direction whilst compressing it perpendicular to the expansion direction and to the major axes of the cells so that the cells adopt a configuration in which they have dimensions in the expansion direction which are large compared with their dimensions in the direction of compression and the material is creased, the compression then being relaxed to allow the material to contract in the expansion direction to a stable, self-sustaining open-cellular state. As shown, a continuous piece of unexpanded honeycomb material is extended in the expansion direction by passage between a pair of rollers 2, 3 which close the cells of the material in a direction normal to that of expansion. On emergence from the nip of the rollers 2, 3, the material contracts longitudinally and expands transversely to open out into a second stable cellular state 5 where the cells are substantially rectangular. The rollers 2, 3 are urged to rotate in opposite directions by a pneumatic ram 7 which pulls a chain 8 to drive a free wheel sprocket 9 which, through pinions 10, 11, drives the wheels 3, 2 the latter wheel being urged toward the wheel 3 by a spring 4. Rotation of the rollers continues until an abutment 14 on the piston-rod of the ram 7 trips a limit value 16 of a pneumatic circuit, not shown, whereupon a pneumatic cutting device 6 is operated to cut off a length of expanded material the length being regulated by the setting of the abutment 14. The shearing cutters 6 may be replaced by rotary, or other, sawing device, the pneumatic mechanism, may be replaced by hydraulic mechanism, and electric motors, may be used instead of the ram 7.
