Abstract

1355606 Vehicle bumpers FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 9 Nov 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 51721/72 Heading B7J A resiliently deformable pneumatic bumper assembly comprises a resilient shell 13 secured to a rigid backing member 15 so as to form an elongate enclosure 19 which contains transverse partitions 29 dividing the enclosure 19 into compartments 27, and passages 31 interconnecting the compartments 27 to allow a restricted air flow therebetween, this restriction being such as to prevent immediate collapse of a compartment 27 upon an impact confined to only part of the shell 13 occuring. The partitions 29 may be integral with shell 13 and have the pasasges 31 formed therein as notches opening against a front portion 21 of the backing member 15, which is adapted to be secured to a vehicle body member 17. An elongate inflatable tube member 33 is recieved within the enclosure 19, this tube member 33 being divided into sausage-like segments 37 by spaced constrictions 35 which coincide with the passages 31 so that each compartment 27 contains a respective segment 37. The segments 37 may have respective pressure relief valves 43 which discharge air to the atmosphere at a predetermined air pressure, and a single valve 39 is provided through which compressed air may be fed to inflate the entire tube member 33.
