Abstract

1355473 Coumarone and indene resins RUTGERSWERKE AG 7 Feb 1972 [6 Feb 1971] 5624/72 Heading C3P Resins are prepared from hydrocarbon fractions comprising coumarone and/or indene by a process in which the fraction is progressively added to a cationic polymerization initiator, the polymerization being carried out at a constant temperature of 60 to 200‹ C. and the hydrocarbon fraction being polymerized without concurrent polymerization of other unsaturated compounds. The temperature may be kept constant by varying the rate of supply of the hydrocarbon fraction, and by changing the constitution of the fraction block copolymers may be produced. The fraction may be a petroleum or coal tar fraction boiling at 100 to 220‹ C. The catalyst may be boron trifluoride etherate and may be initially dispersed in a diluent, e.g. part of the fraction or another aromatic fraction, e.g. xylene. The process may be operated automatically. Examples describe the preparation of (1) coumarone/indene resins from coal tar naphtha and (2 and 3) indene resins from petroleum fractions.
