Abstract
1355346 Isomerizing alkylbenzenes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Aug 1971 [20 Aug 1970] 40154/70 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Alkyl benzenes are isomerized in the presence of a catalyst which comprises a support of silica, silica/alumina or aluminosilicate on the surface of which alumina has been deposited. In particular one or more xylenes containing less than an equilibrium amount of paraxylene are isomerized to produce a product containing a greater concentration of paraxylene. Reaction conditions are 200-600‹ C., 1-500 atmos. pressure, the reaction being carried out in the liquid or gas phase optionally in the presence of steam or ammonia. In the examples a mixture of paraxylene, metaxylene and toluene is isomerized.
