Abstract
1354705 Polyimides ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 17 May 1971 [21 May 1970] 15231/71 Heading C3R A film- or film-forming polymer has recurring units (1) where R is phenylene or C 1 -C 6 alkylene and R<SP>1</SP> is a covalent bond or a divalent organic group free from amino groups, the terminal amido group of each unit being attached to the terminal -CH 2 - of an adjacent unit except that when R is -CH 2 - the polymer can contain recurring units (2) with the terminal imido group attached, to the terminal -CH 2 - of either a unit (1) or (2) and the terminal -CH 2 - attached to the terminal amido of a unit (1) or to the terminal imido of a unit (2). It may be prepared by heating a salt of a tricarboxylic acid with a diamine at 200 to 350‹ C. until a polymer of filmforming molecular weight is obtained. The tricarboxylic acid may be nitrilotriacetic acid; several diamines are specified including straight and branched chain, ether interrupted and substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, and aromatic mono- and fused or linked polycyclic diamines. Certain such polymers prepared as claimed in Specification 1,354,706 are disclaimed. The polymer may be formed into films or fibres, moulded, dissolved in volatile polar solvents, e.g. tetrahydrofuran and used as adhesives, or blended with other polyamides, e.g. nylon 6, to improve antistatic properties.
