Abstract

1354676 Toys M R FORSHAW 28 May 1971 [24 June 1970] 30578/70 Heading A6S [Also in Division H2] A toy comprises sensors arranged in two groups, each group containing at least two sensors each producing an electrical response dependent upon different external stimulii; and two motors at least one of which propels the toy and each of which is associated with one only of the groups of sensors, wherein each sensor is so disposed as to receive a stimulus originating only from a predetermined general direction with respect to the toy, and the electrical responses produced by the sensors regulate the operation of the motors. The sensors may respond to sound, electromagnetic vibrations, &c but in the form shown comprise photo-cells P1, P1' and touch-operated switches S, S'. The photo-cell P1 and the switch S form one group of sensors, and are mounted upon one side of a toy to control a motor M powering a wheel &c on the other, second side of the toy. The photo-cell P1' and the switch S' are mounted upon the second side of the toy, to control a motor M' powering a wheel, &c on the first side of the toy. Increasing intensity of light falling on the photo-cells P1, P1' reduces their resistance and increases the potential applied to the respective motors M, M', which therefore drive more quickly. If the toy meets an obstruction a switch S or S' is opened, and the associated motor M, M' reversed, until the toy has negotiated the obstruction. In a modified form, Fig. 5 (not shown), two photocells control a single motor which propels the toy and also another motor which steers the toy. Touchoperated switches may also be provided to control an alarm, e.g. a flashing light or a horn.
