Abstract

1354597 Ordinance testing RHEINMETALL GmbH 9 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 37385/71 Heading H4D [Also in Division G1] When a projectile 30 leaves the barrel 11 of a gun it has been deviated from the original sighted path by the jump of the end of the barrel. This jump is determined in x and y directions orthogonal to the barrel axis 12 in terms of angular deviation and lateral velocity by the shown apparatus wherein a corner reflector 13 and plane mirror 14 are mounted at the barrel nozzle spaced by 95 degrees in the x and y directions, and reflect the laser beams 9a, 9b respectively produced by sources 2a, 2b, on to photo-detectors 8a, 8b. The reflections from corner reflector 13 undergo lateral deflection only in both x and y directions such that the output of detector 8a enable means 17 to determine the lateral velocities. The reflection from mirror 14 undergoes angular deflections only thereby enabling the derivation of the angular deviations. The movement of the nozzle is continuously displayed on a C.R.T. in storage means 16, a cine-camera producing a permanent record. The instance the projectile leaves the barrel is signalled by the interruption of an X-ray beam 31 from source 20 to detector 15. The reflector 13 and mirror 14 can be replaced by 90 degree prisms, one giving the x component of lateral velocity and y component of angular deviation and the other giving the corresponding y and x components.
