Abstract

1354499 Oxidizing sulphur compounds CHEMECH ENG Ltd 20 Aug 1971 [22 Aug 1970] 40523/70 Heading C1C A process for the oxidation of malodorous organic sulphur compounds formed during the digestion step in the operation of a kraft pulp mill, which sulphur compounds have been separated into a liquid condensed portion and a gaseous portion, comprises passing a stream of gas containing molecular oxygen (e.g. air) through the liquid portion to strip the sulphur compounds therefrom, then mixing the gas with the gaseous portion and using the molecular oxygen as combustion oxygen in the oxidation at elevated temperature of the sulphur compounds, the mixture having a concentration of combustible materials less than at which it becomes explosive. The oxidation may be carried out in the presence of a steel catalyst.
