Abstract

135,441. Sansom, W. E. June 20, 1919. Morse and like code transmitting-arrangements -Automatic apparatus for transmitting by wireless a pre-arranged Morse message is primarily designed for use on a buoy thrown overboard by a vessel in distress, but is capable of other uses, as at a directional wireless station. Fig 3 shows the upper part of a buoy with the message-drum 20, the motor 19 that drives it, and tho transmitting-key 21 which is operated by the messagedrum. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the message drum. Plungers not shown in Fig. 6, of lengths corresponding to dots and dashes, are arranged side by side in pairs, as at 26, 27, Fig. 12, in the helical groove 23 so as to be set by means of keys 25. A message built up of Morse code elements can thus be set up on the drum. The plungers pass over the transmitting key in succession as the drum rotates, the end of the key being capable of a slight sideways movement against spring control to follow the helical groove. The message is repeated over and over again, the key being enabled to fly buck to the other side of the drum as it nears the end of the helical groove by the automatic depression of a key-restoring shutter or trap door 29 which constitutes a movable segment of the drum surface. Triggers 37, 38, Fig. 6, are instrumental in opening and closing the trap-door 29.
