Abstract

1354322 Electroless deposition of magnetic coatings IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 May 1972 [20 May 1971 16 June 1971] 16006/71 and 28211/71 Heading C7F A magnetic information carrier is made by exposing to radiation, and thus sensitizing, a sensitive material dissolved or dispersed in a water-permeable film forming matrix applied to a non-magnetic support, the sensitive material containing (i) neutral free radicals, (ii) radical cations and/or (iii) neutral molecules Z derived from compounds containing dicationic units by two electron reduction, the dicationic compound being Z<SP>++</SP> in the equation and in which Z<SP>++</SP> is the normally stable oxidation state of the molecule in aqueous media, Z<SP>++</SP> containing in the molecule N atoms at least two of which are quaternized and contained in rings linked so that a chain of conjugated unsaturation links the N atoms, and then electrolessly depositing magnetic metallic material thereon. The support may be a thin film (up to 50Á) of glass, Al, paper or plastics, and may be pretreated with chemical etchants, ozone, flame treatment or ionic bombardment and/or covered with an anchor coat about 0À1Á thick to enhance adhesion of the metal. The radiation sensitive material is applied in a mixture of 5-20 wt. parts water-permeable polymer, 0À1-10 parts of the material, and water, up to 100 parts; said material may be a peroxide, organometallic, or a bipyridyl or related compound, of which extensive lists are given. The material is exposed, with or without use of a mask, to U. V., I. R., electron beam or visible light; sensitizers, desensitizers, or speed improvers may be added to the sensitive material where required, lists of these being given. Optionally the exposed material is activated with a salt of Au, Ag, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt; it is then electroless plated with Ni and/or Co, plus P, from a hypophosphite bath to give a ferromagnetic coating useful for audio, video, or computer-tape.
